Linking Generations receives the Strathcona Award of Excellence 2023 Outstanding Group

Below is the recognition given to Linking Generations by Councillor Lorne Harvey.

Our first Award for Outstanding Group goes to Linking Generations.

For nearly 20 years, Linking Generations has fostered meaningful friendships between local youth and seniors. Their work has sparked joy, meaning and purpose in countless lives — young and old alike.

Launched as a charitable organization in 2004, Linking Generations matches students from partnership schools with older adults at local seniors facilities. The junior and senior high students then meet regularly with the seniors throughout the entire school year. The pairs are not only different ages, but often come from different religions, cultures and backgrounds. Each visit is structured to connect the teen and senior, whether their weekly goal is to revisit memories, share knowledge or chat about cultural experiences. For many seniors, these visits are essential, ensuring they don’t experience the isolation that can threaten older adults’ social, mental and physical health. Linking Generations combats loneliness, providing a space for seniors to share their wisdom and experience. They develop a renewed sense of belonging and purpose, all while giving back to the next generation. Through the program, youth learn about social responsibility and glean incredible life lessons from their elders. Students also build confidence, empathy and leadership abilities — skills they will take into their future, careers, families and communities. Most importantly, people of different ages find common ground through shared stories, laughter and quality time.

Beyond their work in Strathcona County, Linking Generations is also making a difference at the provincial level.

They helped create an Intergenerational Toolkit in partnership with the Minister of Seniors and Housing, and received the Minister’s Seniors Service Award in 2021.

Over the last two decades, Linking Generations has met a vital need in our community by bridging generational gaps. Countless youth and seniors have benefited from one another’s friendship, strengthening the community from within. Together, we are building a Strathcona County where we belong to one another.

Thank you, Linking Generations!
