The Linking Generations Volunteer Grandparent Program was created in 2019 in response to a lack of opportunities for young and old to relate in an increasingly age-segregated society. Under this program, Senior volunteers can volunteer within a school Environment – Grades 1-6 in different schools in Sherwood Park and The City of Fort Saskatchewan.
Senior volunteer Grandparents share skills, knowledge, experience, all while providing a valuable community service.
Our Volunteer бабуся Marianne, taught her St Nicholas students how to plant, nurture and grow tomatoes in early spring.
The plants came home with her over Easter to babysit – then headed back to school so the kids could water them and care for them. The students split into 2 teams – boys and girls – and each came up with a team name. Then they got 2 plants each and were asked to keep one and share one…and the handful of left over plants went to the staff (caretaker & teachers). Students were sent them home with instructions that Marainne had written out so the parents knew what to do with the plants. Now the class knows where food comes from.
